“The biz”. Sounds like showbiz, doesn’t it? There is a lot of showing, and there is definitely a shitload of business. Last Tuesday marked the 6 month mark of my first industry job as a professional artist, and it has been an interesting ride. It hasn’t been the kind of eye-opener that I thought it would be. Thanks to communities like Polycount, and helpful people like Vidar Rapp and Staffan Persson (who is a luddite, and thus has no blog/website) - I think I came into this whole thing fairly well prepared.
I have been told that my joining the company (TT Fusion, part of Traveller’s Tales, part of Warner Bros.) was a bit like being tossed into water for the first time, and that I was either going to learn how to swim, or sink, and die horribly, get all spongy, and eaten by hungry fish. Things were very hectic, and no one really had the time to sit down with me and explain how things were done. Except for Warren, of course. Warren is the kind of guy who knows everything about everything, and is always willing to share his knowledge and help out. I probably owe him a debt I will be hard pressed to work off.
I didn’t sink, though, so I think I have learned how to swim. Or at least stay afloat. Since my start I have finished one project - Guinness World Records - The Video Game - which you can buy if you think it looks like fun, and if you don’t you shouldn’t of course buy it. There were times during the game’s development that I hated it with a vengeance, but in the end I was surprised to see just how well it all came together, and how fun and competitive it is. But don’t take my word for it, since I was part of making it.
Oh yeah, in this whole changing jobs thing I moved from Sweden, to the UK. It wasn’t as tricky as I had thought it would be, and my family back home was very supportive. Especially my grandmother who was very sad to see me leave, but still managed to be encouraging while fighting back tears. I owe her the world for so many things. I’m slowly getting acclimated to the culture (football and pubs) and climate (rain, rain, rain), and it isn’t completely out of the realm of possibility that I might have a more permanent place than I had first thought here, even though I don’t enjoy watching football, and pubs are only nice with the right company. I love rain, though.
I don’t post a lot here about the things going on in my life, but today has been an exception. It’s good to finally have the job of my dreams. Is it all I thought it would be? Well, the answer to that is the old cliché: It really is what you make of it.
